Faithless FAQ
Do atheists have any morals?

Do atheists have any morals?

Morality does not require religion. Atheists, like everyone else, live within societies that have developed ethical frameworks over thousands of years based on empathy, cooperation, and shared human experience.

Where does atheist morality come from?

Most atheists base their sense of right and wrong on secular ethics — the idea that actions can be evaluated by their impact on the well-being of people and other living things. This is sometimes called secular humanism.

Does removing religion remove accountability?

Not at all. Atheists are accountable to the same social, legal, and personal standards as anyone else. The motivation to be a good person comes from caring about others, not from fear of divine punishment.
